Science update of the SAFA expert panel discussion at EFL and ISSFAL

Posted on: September 22, 2016

The results of a SAFA expert meeting convened in Leiden, the Netherlands in October 2015, have recently been discussed at the 14th Euro Fed Lipid Congress (Ghent, Belgium) and 12th Congress of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (Stellenbosch, South Africa) by Prof. Dr. Ir. Ingeborg Brouwer (VU University Amsterdam) and Dr. Ir. Janette de Goede (Wageningen University).

The meeting aimed to assess the scientific state of the art on the effect of saturated fatty acid (SAFA) consumption on the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke.

The authors concluded that strong evidence supports the partial replacement of dietary SAFA with cis-PUFA to lower LDL-C and reduce CHD risk.
