American Heart Association issues ‘Presidential Advisory’ on dietary fats and cardiovascular disease

Posted on: June 27, 2017

In the past few years, meta-analyses of observational studies and randomized clinical trials have come to discordant conclusions about the relationship between dietary saturated fat and risk of Cardio Vascular Disease. This American Heart Association presidential advisory on dietary fats and CVD analyses and discusses the methodology and interpretation of results reported by these researchers and the reasons for the divergent findings.

The authors conclude that lowering intake of saturated fat AND replacing it with unsaturated fats, especially polyunsaturated fats, will lower the incidence of CVD. According to the authors, this recommended shift from saturated to unsaturated fats should occur simultaneously in an overall healthful dietary pattern as emphasized by the 2015 to 2020 Dietary guidelines for Americans.
